College for Kids offers enrichment opportunities for kids and teens ages 5-17. Classes are designed to develop new interests, teach meaningful skills and excite students about learning. Scroll down to see all of the classes we are offering for the Summer 2017.

How to enroll

To register, click the blue register online button to the right.  If you are enrolling more than one child each child must be enrolled separately.  Registration works best from a personal computer or laptop, not a mobile device.  When checking out do not create an account, just check out unregistered.

Refund Policy

We must guarantee a minimum enrollment to hold a camp. If you need to withdraw, please contact the Community Education office, 816.604.3011 at least five (5) business days prior to the camp start date. You may request a full refund – minus a $5 processing fee. No refund will be given for camps canceled fewer than five business days prior to the start of the camp.

MinecraftⓇ Animators – Black Rocket
Bring your favorite Minecraft characters to life in an animated short film! Learn how studios like Pixar and Disney make movies like Inside Out and Frozen by using techniques like keyframing, tweening, texturing, and animating rigged 3D models! Student projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. You do not need to own a Minecraft account to use the software in this class. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years. Mac users can play their project at home, but will not be able to edit the project without a PC. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years.

Code Breakers – Black Rocket
Calling all future coders, programmers, & designers! Learn the basics of coding languages like HTML, JavaScript, and CSS through a series of web projects and design challenges each day and be on your way to becoming the next tech star! Whether you want to be the next Mark Zuckerberg or the high school student who just made $1 million dollars for programming in his bedroom, this course has the essentials you need to begin your journey. Projects will be available on a Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years.

3, 2, 1 Blastoff! - Mad Science
This action packed week will focus on rockets and the physics of rocket flight. After learning the model rocket safety code, campers will build several different types of rockets and participate in the launching of multiple different rockets during the week long program. Children will be divided into three groups; altitude trackers, launch preparation and launchers for all rocket launches and will get the opportunity to try all three roles

Princess Workshop - Young Rembrandts
Everybody loves to play dress-up! In this workshop we will learn to draw ourselves in “glamour” wear. We will draw accessories including purses, crowns and jewelry as well as simple faces with crowns and hats. Step-by-step Young Rembrandts drawing techniques will insure our success! Pencils, color pencils, markers and Sharpies™ will be used. All materials are provided.

Super Mario® & Classic Arcade Brick Adventures LEGO® Camp – Bricks4Kids
Jump into the world of classic arcade and video games! Eat flashing dots, collect coins and rings, avoid getting killed by enemies....there are so many obstacles to overcome and levels to beat! Can you build a motorized Mario that can run fast and jump high to help save Princess Toadstool? Campers will build the famous plumber brothers, a Brick Eater, a jumping hedgehog, alien invaders, and more! Can you guess which classic game each model represents? Each camper will bring home a custom mini-figure at the end of the week.

Bat League Heroes and Villains LEGO® Camp – Bricks4Kids
Enter the dark city where a dangerous jokester and other evil villains wreak havoc. Thankfully there is a bat hero who comes out each night to fight against these evil-doers! The good guys will ride into action as campers build motorized LEGO® models of the bat hero's speedy vehicle cruising through the city streets as well. Send the bat hero swinging on his grappling hook technic model from one skyscraper to the next as he fights crime with his trusty super sidekick. Campers will use their imaginations, building skills and crime-fighting passion in this thrilling camp of bat heroes and villains! Video Game Animation – Black Rocket
Take your game design skills to the next level by creating and animating your own character sprites, objects, and backgrounds. Start with a name, develop the character’s personality, signature moves, special powers, and a story line. Finish with a fully animated character to be used in your very own game. Students do not need any prior experience in game design, animation, or sketching. Student-created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Games are only compatible on PC computers; Mac versions can be created after the program for $15.00 conversion fee. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Clues, Crimes & Culprits – Mad Science
Oh NO! The Mad Science monkey is missing! Will you help us figure out where the monkey is? How he got out? And, what he is up to? Join the Mad Science crew as we gather the evidence from the crime scene, and take it back to the lab to analyze it. As the week goes on we will use chemistry, forensics science, physics, and biology to solve the crime. Blood typing, DNA examination, and pH testing are only a few of the scientific tests our young sleuths will get to participate in.

LEGO® Mining and Crafting 1 Camp – Bricks 4 Kids
Minecraft is a game about placing blocks to build anything you can imagine. At night monsters come out, make sure to build a shelter before that happens! Experience the world of Minecraft with LEGO Bricks in this fun engineering camp. Kids will start by crafting their shelters and some of the mobs, critters and tools using LEGO® Bricks. Checkmate Challenge LEGO® Camp – KC Chess Club
Checkmate Challenge Lego Camp is designed to introduce youth to chess strategy and tactics while showing kids basic engineering skills in building chess sets. The Kansas City Chess Club certified staff will show kids how to build Lego Chess Sets while showing key chess strategy tactics. There will be medals, chess books prizes, and a Chess Camp T-Shirt for all players! Fun for both girls and boys, all skill levels welcome. Boy Scouts can earn their Chess merit badge and Cub Scouts can earn their belt loop and pin while having fun!

Introductory Digital Photography for Kids!
In this class we will take digital images of the world around us, starting with the landscape around Maple Woods campus, and ending up in our own homes. With the pictures that you take, you will have the opportunity to tell stories and express your own unique vision of the world. You do not need a fancy camera for this class- a simple point-and-shoot (including the one in your phone) will work great! We will learn some editing basics in the computer lab, including how to post our work online, and print out a few choice photos at the end. No experience required, just a desire to click and share!

Room Dazzlers!
Are you looking for a way to give your bedroom some pizazz? Are you always on the lookout for the next new, crafty project? Then this is the class for you! You will learn how to create accessories for your bedroom using simple sewing and crafting techniques. You will even be able to customize each project with your unique color scheme. Assemblage Assembly Line
The fun of assemblage art is the process of choosing the different materials used to create a sculpture, and then putting them all together in a unique and crazy way! In this one-week camp, we will create 1-3 mixed-media sculptures from found and recycled objects. We’ll construct one sculpture from contrasting materials such as wood, metal, natural objects, and paper. Our second sculpture will be constructed from lots of similar objects for example tin cans or paper cups. If you love art and creating fun things by hand this is the camp for you.

Super Summer Science Lab – Mad Science
Let Mad Science get you moving with this great four-day camp. Do you love to build, design, and fix things? Put on your engineer's hat to see how science is used to build skyscrapers, bridges, and tunnels. Use simple machines to help lift weights. Spend a day being a true Mad Scientist as you learn about chemical reactions that you might encounter in your daily life. Ever wonder how a camera works? See how cameras capture light to store images and how movie makers make images move and create 3-D effects during "Shutterbugs" day. Finally, take a walk on the wild side as you explore the nature of birds, beasts, and bugs.

Our final day will result in one large scene of the zoo, divided into several habitats and incorporating the many animal friends we have learned to draw. Ocean Life Pastel Drawing – Young Rembrandts
Four fun-filled days await our students as we explore ocean life as they learn to draw and color with pastels. We will create detailed, pastel compositions on each day, focusing on a different ocean-themed subject. Eye-catching sea stars, a pair of vibrant clown fish, a sea turtle with bold patterns, and much more. Our instruction will bring remarkable results, and you will want to head to the frame shop with your child’s finished pastel pieces. Please wear an old shirt or smock each day. Digital Photo Storytelling!
Become a Digital Photo Storyteller by expanding the skills learned in introductory digital photography. We will embark on exciting explorations around campus, and learn new tricks for capturing and editing great pictures. We will learn about different types of portrait lighting, Macro photography, how to compose a landscape, and how to create cool effects using computer software. All you need is a basic digital camera (could be the one in your smartphone), a flash drive, and a bit of imagination!

This class allows you to develop a game concept that goes well beyond the limitations of the traditional 2D game design classes and create an immersive 3D world. My First Science Lab – Mad Science
What do worms eat? Why do some things float, while others sink? How do our senses work and what's inside our bodies? Young scientists will have fun exploring the lights, color, sound, and music of the natural world. Hands-on sessions will teach senses, bodies, animals, insects, and simple chemistry. Checkmate Challenge Lego Camp – KC Chess Club
Checkmate Challenge Lego Camp is designed to introduce youth to chess strategy and tactics while showing kids basic engineering skills in building chess sets. The Kansas City Chess Club certified staff will show kids how to build Lego Chess Sets while showing key chess strategy tactics. There will be medals, chess books prizes, and a Chess Camp T-Shirt for all players! Fun for both girls and boys, all skill levels welcome. Boy Scouts can earn their Chess merit badge and Cub Scouts can earn their belt loop and pin while having fun!

MinecraftⓇ Designers – Black Rocket
If you love the game Minecraft, and always wanted to design your own world, this class is for you! Learn how to create a custom map, the basics of creating 3D models using a new software to design your very own objects, how to build with Redstone and Command blocks, and create custom textures for you to import at home or share with friends. To access their project at home students, must own a PC/MAC version of Minecraft. Tablet, phone, and game console versions of Minecraft are not compatible. Parent email address is required to use 3D modeling software. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years.

MinecraftⓇ Animators – Black Rocket
Bring your favorite Minecraft characters to life in an animated short film! Learn how studios like Pixar and Disney make movies like Inside Out and Frozen by using techniques like keyframing, tweening, texturing, and animating rigged 3D models! Student projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. You do not need to own a Minecraft account to use the software in this class. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years. New – OOey Gross Science – Mad Science
Children will make a lemon battery, electroplate a penny and conduct electrochemistry with goldenrod paper. Clean up your own germs with soap and “exploding toothpaste” and then get dirty again with slime. They will find out what stomach acids do by experimenting with our popper stoppers and liquid ooze. Discover how a clock can run on soda or water without batteries. Children will learn about what makes up a cell and your heredity like taste. Discover what burps are made of with dry ice. They learn how new compounds are created from chemical reactions. They then take a fantastic trip into “cell city” and the human body. Last but not least, they become a forensic scientist and learn the science behind solving a crime!
